9 Things to do in Ljubljana, Slovenia
Nestled along the banks of the Ljubljanica River, Ljubljana, Slovenia’s capital city, is one of Europe’s best-kept secrets. With its charming mix of medieval and modern architecture and a vibrant cultural scene, Ljubljana offers visitors a unique experience that’s both historical and forward-looking. Let’s dive into the best things to do in Ljubljana, one of my new favorite cities in Europe!
1. River Cruise on the Ljubljanica River
One of the best ways to experience the beauty of Ljubljana is from the water. The Ljubljanica River winds its way through the heart of the city, providing a unique perspective of its picturesque architecture. A river cruise offers a relaxing way to soak in the sights and sounds of the city, with several companies offering boat tours.
The cost of a 45-60 minute river cruise typically ranges from €10 to €15 per person, depending on the operator and the length of the tour. You’ll see several vendors selling tickets throughout the city or can purchase them online beforehand. Some boats are enclosed and heated in the winter months so you can enjoy a cruise year-round.
Here was our experience on the river cruise:
2. Central Market
No visit to Ljubljana is complete without spending some time at the Central Market. This open-air market, is located in the heart of the city between Vodnikov trg and Pogačarnev trg squares. The market is divided into several sections, offering fresh produce, local delicacies, flowers, and handmade crafts. The market operates year-round, though it’s especially lively in the summer months when outdoor cafés and food trucks add to the atmosphere.
3. Day Trip to Lake Bled
Just an hour’s drive from Ljubljana lies Lake Bled, one of Slovenia’s most well-known destinations. The lake is crystal-clear and has a small island at its center. The island is home to a picturesque church, and the surrounding area offers a range of activities, from hiking to boat rides. If you don’t have a rental car, you can take a bus or join a guided tour to the lake from Ljbuljana.
What to do:
- Pletna Boat Ride to Bled Island: The traditional wooden boats, called pletna, will take you to the island where you can visit the Church of the Assumption of Mary. The cost of the boat ride is around €15–€20 per person. If you’re up for it, you can rent a boat and row yourself to the island (it’s only 15-20 minutes). This will cost €25–€35 per boat and is a fun way to see the lake on your own. Whether you go with a group or row your own boat, you will find several options around the lake.
- Bled Castle: Perched on a cliff above the lake, Bled Castle offers stunning views of the lake and surrounding Alps. The entrance fee is €18, and it includes access to the museum and the castle’s terrace. We purchased tickets on arrival but if you want to purchase tickets in advance, you can buy them here: Bled Castle Tickets
- Walk around the lake: Enjoy a peaceful 6 km walk around the lake.

4. Dragon Bridge
One of Ljubljana’s most iconic landmarks is the Dragon Bridge, a symbol of the city’s mythology and history. The bridge is adorned with four dragon statues, which, according to local legend, were placed there to guard the city. The dragons are an essential part of Ljubljana’s identity and have become synonymous with the city’s unique character.
5. Franciscan Church of the Annunciation
Located at the heart of Ljubljana, the Franciscan Church of the Annunciation is a stunning example of Baroque architecture. Its striking pink façade is one of the most recognizable sights in the city.
6. Metelkova Mesto
Once a military barracks, Metelkova has transformed into a alternative cultural space, covered in street art and home to galleries, music venues, and quirky bars that come alive at night. It’s completely free to visit and definitely a unique spot in Ljubljana. The neighborhood is safe to visit but it is a bit rough around the edges so keep that in mind if you plan to go.
7. Ljubljana Castle
Perched on a hill overlooking the city, Ljubljana Castle is one of the most prominent landmarks in the city. The castle’s history dates back to the 11th century, and it has served various roles throughout the centuries, from a defensive fortress to a royal residence.
What to Do:
- Castle Grounds: The castle grounds offer incredible panoramic views of the city and the surrounding area. It’s a great place to take in the scenery, especially during sunset. You can explore the grounds surrounding the castle for free.
- Museum Exhibits: Inside, you can explore various exhibitions that showcase Ljubljana’s history, including medieval weapons, exhibits on the city’s past, and a digital time machine experience. Ticket prices start at €15.
- Funicular Ride: The easiest way to reach the castle is via the funicular, which costs around €4 for a round-trip ticket.
- Walk to Castle Hill: Instead of taking the funicular, you can walk to the castle with several different routes. Most take only 10-15 minutes and offer great views on the way up. You can check out the walking routes here: Walking Routes to Ljubljana Castle
8. Enjoying Cafes and Restaurants Along the River
One of the most delightful ways to spend time in Ljubljana is by simply enjoying the cafes and restaurants that line the Ljubljanica River. The area is filled with charming outdoor terraces where you can sip coffee or glass of wine, enjoy a gelato, or have a meal while enjoying great views of the city.

9. Tivoli Park
For those who appreciate nature, Tivoli Park is Ljubljana’s largest and most popular park. The park is a lush green space, perfect for a leisurely walk, a picnic, or a jog. It’s also home to several sculptures, ponds, and gardens.
Ljubljana may be small in size, but it offers a rich array of attractions that make it a perfect destination for travelers seeking history, culture, and natural beauty. With its affordable prices, charming atmosphere, and friendly locals, Ljubljana is sure to leave you with lasting memories and a desire to return.
TIME AND MONEY SAVING TIP

It offers access to 20+ museums and galleries, a guided tour of the city, a tourist boat river cruise, use of the Ljubljana Castle funicular, and more.
